Future of Retirement

Front cover of 2008 reportThe Future of Retirement programme is a key initiative, establishing HSBC Insurance as a market leader in the increasingly important retirement market. Now in its fourth year, the programme has positioned HSBC Insurance at the forefront of retirement ‘thought leadership'.

The Future of Retirement: Investing in later life is once again authored by Professor Sarah Harper, at the Oxford Institute of Ageing. It examines the data collected from over 21,000 people in 25 countries and territories around the world, to investigate how people prepare for what is now emerging as the ‘second half of their lives'.

The report findings are crucial to HSBC meeting the needs of its 128 million customers world-wide. It enables HSBC to continue to produce innovative financial solutions, specific to the needs and aspirations of each gender and age group, in the many countries around the globe.

The Future of Retirement: Investing in later Life report reveals some striking findings across four key themes – expectations, choice, vulnerability and inheritance, these include:

  • A large proportion of the world's ageing population are unprepared for later life and are potentially facing the prospect of falling into a serious ‘vulnerability trap' in retirement
  • There is a significant lack of confidence in governments across the world to support their ageing populations
  • The majority of people think that the role of governments should be in enforcing additional private savings
  • Individuals would prefer to leave their children their perspective on life than money
