The second HSBC Champions golf tournament takes place at Shanghai's Sheshan International Golf Club between 9 and 12 November 2006.

The field is the strongest ever seen in China with 10 of the world's top 20 players taking part, including world numbers one and two, Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk; two-time US Open Championship winner Retief Goosen, and European Ryder Cup stars Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Colin Montgomerie.

Supporting HSBC's status as the world's local bank, this year's tournament has attracted players from over 20 countries. HSBC Champions is the only golf competition where winners from around the world are rewarded with an invitation to compete against the world's leading players for the largest prize fund on offer in Asia of US$5 million.

As a curtain raiser for the prestigious event, defending Champion David Howell joined Tiger Woods, HSBC World Match Play Champion Paul Casey and 16-year old Mu Hu for a game of table tennis. Howell described it as an honour to be defending the title he won narrowly from Tiger Woods last year. "Everybody who is here this week has either won a tournament or is ranked as one of the world's top players. It's a great field and a great tournament," he added.

HSBC Group Chairman, Stephen Green speaking at the launch event, said: "China has seen remarkable growth in the past two decades, not just economically but also in the area of sports and golf. We hope that the HSBC Champions tournament will draw the world's attention to both China and Asia and help promote the game in the region."
