HSBC has given US$500,000 to aid agencies in India and Pakistan following the earthquake in the region.
Millions of people have been left homeless following the tremor on 8 October, which measured 7.6 on the Richter scale. Aid is beginning to flow into the region, but the efforts of international and local volunteer groups are being hampered by severe storms.
HSBC's donation will go to aid agencies who are working to help people in the region and to the President of Pakistan Relief Fund.
Stephen Green, HSBC Group Chief Executive, said: "We have all been deeply shocked and saddened by the devastating effects of the earthquake in Pakistan and parts of India. Our thoughts are very much with those members of staff and customers who have families and friends in the region at this extremely difficult time."
Special accounts are being opened by HSBC in Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, for any donations HSBC staff or customers would like to make to the appeal. Details of how to make a donation will be made available in local branches.
