Charity donation replaces Christmas cards at HSBC

22 December 2004

Charities around the globe will receive a total of £210,000 from HSBC this Christmas, as several parts of the Group turn their back on the corporate Christmas card in favour of charitable giving.

Over the past ten years, HSBC has donated more than £1 million to charity instead of sending cards to thousands of contacts and suppliers. This year, six good causes will each receive £35,000 – giving them an early boost to their 2005 fundraising targets. The recipients are:

  • Red Crescent Thalassaemia Blood Transfusion Centre
The first of its kind in Chittagong, Bangladesh, the centre will provide blood transfusions to people living in the city and surrounding rural areas.
  • The Children’s Society
This UK charity supports children and young people across the country and is currently focusing on four main groups: children at risk on the streets, children in trouble with the law, disabled children; and young refugees.
  • Associacao Paranense Alegria de Viver
This Brazil-based charity gives residential care to orphans and deprived families living with HIV and AIDS.
  • British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF)
A leading UK charity that helps raise awareness of the issues affecting children separated from their birth families.
  • Operation Smile
A not for profit voluntary health and welfare organisation, Operation Smile provides reconstructive surgery for children from developing countries and the USA.
  • CARE International UK
Part of the global CARE International confederation, CARE UK promotes community self-reliance and aims to reduce long-term dependency across the developing world. It specialises in relieving poverty across poor city communities. The donation will support the charity’s work in the Middle East.

HSBC’s latest Christmas bonanza follows the launch of the UK bank’s secret santa programme covering 1,000 of its branches, offices and call centres. Through the ‘Neighbours in Need’ scheme, which aims to become the country’s largest Secret Santa giveaway, HSBC staff and customers are spreading Christmas cheer by donating presents for people living in deprived areas across the UK.
